The company confirms the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will end up with a tuned version of the 6.2-liter "AMG 63" V8, with dry-sump lubrication and perhaps 571 horsepower. The transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch rear-mounted transaxle with steering-wheel shift paddles. Early reports out of Stuttgart suggest 0-60 mph times of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of nearly 200 mph.
Even more than the SLR, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is intended as a fast, comfortable, "transcontinental express," not an all-out sports car, so it should be quite posh. Mercedes says the cockpit was inspired by aircraft engineering, hence the wing-shaped dashboard and round vents that resemble jet engines. Other aircraft-themed details are found throughout, including a shifter that is shaped like the thrust controller on a jet. Look for all the usual Mercedes gizmos to be standard or at least available, plus new gimmicks like lane-departure control and a "sleepy-driver" warning system of some kind.
Shape
Allusions to aircraft construction come courtesy of the prominent Mercedes star, whose tubular section is reminiscent of the air intake on a jet engine when viewed from the side, as well as the long bonnet: as the eye is drawn for-ward, so the observer becomes more aware of the curve. The design of the four fins with their Silver Shadow finish that adorn the two air outlet grilles on the end of the bonnet create the same visual impression. These aircraft-style lines also visually accelerate the air that flows past – and make the SLS AMG appear extremely dynamic even while stationary.
